Mud rotary drilling circulates a fluid mixture (drilling mud, typically bentonite clay and water) down through the drill string and back up the annular space to remove drill cuttings and maintain borehole wall stability through hydrostatic pressure. The fluid cake that forms on the borehole wall prevents collapse in loose, unconsolidated formations such as sand, gravel, or clay-rich sediment. Mud rotary is less commonly used in Northern Idaho’s predominantly hard rock and consolidated geology, but may be selected for specific site conditions where formation instability makes air rotary impractical. After drilling, the mud must be thoroughly removed during well development before the well enters service.
