Definition
An injection well is a drilled structure designed to direct fluids into a subsurface formation rather than extracting water from it. Unlike extraction wells, injection wells return fluids to the ground. Applications in Northern Idaho include stormwater management systems that direct surface runoff into the subsurface for infiltration, land remediation projects that reintroduce treated water to groundwater, and certain industrial process water management systems. Injection wells in the U.S. are regulated under the EPA’s Underground Injection Control (UIC) program and, in Idaho, require IDWR permitting in addition to federal compliance. Construction standards ensure that injected fluids cannot reach or contaminate underground sources of drinking water.
