Coliform Bacteria Test

Definition

A coliform bacteria test analyzes a water sample for the presence of total coliform bacteria and, specifically, E. coli (Escherichia coli). Total coliform bacteria are a broad group of environmental bacteria; their presence indicates potential contamination pathways but does not automatically mean dangerous water. E. coli is a specific indicator of fecal contamination and presents a direct health risk. Sources of coliform contamination in private wells include a compromised well cap or casing, inadequate grout seal, proximity to septic systems, surface runoff, flooding near the wellhead, and cracked or deteriorated casing. Coliform testing is the most commonly required water test for Idaho real estate transactions and lender qualification.
