Ask three North Idaho drillers how long the wait is for a new well and you will get three very different answers, all of them honest. The wait is not one number. It is a permit, a place in a schedule, and the ground under your parcel, and only one of those three is inside anyone’s control.
Trident Drilling runs one rig with a tender and a helper truck across Kootenai, Bonner, Shoshone and Benewah counties, out of Coeur d’Alene. Here is what actually determines when the rig arrives at your property, and how to make your date sooner rather than later.
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is there really a waitlist? | Yes. Scheduling times vary considerably by contractor, season, and current demand. Ask each driller for their current estimated start date. |
| What is Trident’s current wait? | Call (208) 683-7455 and we will give you today’s real date. We do not publish a number that would be stale by the time you read it. |
| How long does the drilling itself take? | Typically 2-4 days on site. |
| How fast do you quote? | Within 24-48 hours of getting your address. We review the surrounding well logs to better understand the lithology to refine a more accurate quote. |
| What moves you up the list? | An occupied property with no water, a confirmed parcel, permitting handled early, and a deposit that holds the slot. |
Why is the wait for a well so long here?
Because demand grew faster than the number of rigs did. Kootenai County had 171,362 residents at the 2020 census, up from 138,494 in 2010 — a 23.7% increase in a decade (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020 Census). Growth on that scale in a county where new rural homes are on private wells, not city water, produces exactly the queue you are standing in.
Rigs are not something you add quickly. A drill rig is a large capital purchase, it needs a licensed driller and a crew, and both are scarce. So when a field becomes a 2,000-home development, the wait for everyone else lengthens.
What are the parts of the wait?
| Stage | Typical duration | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Quote | 24–48 hours after we have your address | Us – this is the fast part |
| Permit | Typically 24 hours for properties over the Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer and approximately 48 hours outside the aquifer, once the required information is submitted. | IDWR processes the permit; Trident prepares and submits the permit application. |
| Place in the schedule | The real wait, and it varies through the year | Demand, plus how early you commit |
| Drilling on site | 2–4 days | Mother Nature – Clay, Sand, and Gravel are slower to drill than granite. |
| Well log filed with the state | After completion | Trident Drilling |
| Pump and plumbing | After the well | Pump and electrical work follows completion of the well. Trident coordinates this portion of the project with licensed and insured pump companies. |
The stage people mean when they say “the waitlist” is the third one. And the way to shorten it is not to call more often. It is to be ready before the slot opens.

When is the best time to book?
Winter is catch-up work in North Idaho, and the limiting factor is roads, not frozen soil; if a rig can reach the property, it can drill. Spring is when construction schedules and tax refunds arrive together, and the calendar fills. Summer is when existing wells run dry and calls spike, which is the worst possible time to be starting the conversation.
Which means the counterintuitive answer holds: the best time to book a well is the season before you need it. If you are building next summer, get on the schedule this autumn. If your existing well showed drawdown symptoms in August, plan now rather than next July. See well deepening and well rehabilitation and repair for options short of a new well.
What if I have no water right now?
Say that on the first call. An occupied house with no water is triaged differently from a lot that will be built on next year. We provide temporary water-storage tanks and portable pump system as a bridge, which is what temporary water and emergency water support is for. It does not move the rig, but it makes the wait livable.
How do I get scheduled faster?
- Provide the following: Adress, Parcel number, or text a google maps / apples maps pin to the (208) 683 7455
- Get the quote early, even if you are not ready to commit. Quotes take us 24–48 hours; a place in the schedule takes longer.
- We handle the required permitting, which is approved within 24-48hrs prior to start date.
- Commit with a deposit when you are sure. A slot is held by a commitment, not an intention.
- Tell us your real constraint; a closing date, a lender’s flow test, a build schedule. We can sequence around a known date. We cannot sequence around one we find out about late.
- Be flexible on access. A property the Drill and Tender can reach without site work is easier to fit into a gap in the calendar.
If a lender is involved, start earlier than feels necessary. Banks generally want a proven flow rate, commonly five gallons per minute, before funding, and the flow test happens after the well. A well timeline can quietly become a loan timeline. Water well inspections cover the testing side of that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will you tell me the truth about the wait, or what I want to hear?
The date we give you is the date we believe. If your timeline does not work with our schedule, we would rather say so on the first call than hold you for a season and then apologize.
Does a deposit guarantee a date?
A deposit holds your place in the schedule. Geology and weather can still move a specific week — that is drilling, not sales.
Can you drill in winter?
Yes. Frozen ground is easier than hard rock. Road access and closures are what stop winter work in these four counties.
Do you drill outside Kootenai County?
We work roughly a 90-minute radius from Coeur d’Alene, covering Kootenai, Bonner, Shoshone and Benewah counties. Our service areas page has the detail, and we will tell you straight if a property is outside it.
How do I start?
Schedule well drilling with your address, or call (208) 683-7455. The address is what lets us research the logs and quote quickly.
